Improving System Safety through Left-Turn Signal Operations

August 12, 2025 | 10:00-10:45AM

In 2023, the City of Austin adopted new left-turn treatment guidelines, a modified version of FHWA’s Signal Timing Guide (NCHRP 812). Since the summer of 2023, the City has evaluated 2295 signalized left-turns at 624 intersections and implemented new left turn protections at 148 intersections. The City of Austin’s Vision Zero team analyzed changes in crash rates for 73 of these intersections and found a 74% decrease in left turn related crash rates and a 48% decrease in fatal and injury crash rates overall.

This poster will cover the following categories and aspects of the project as outlined below with a special focus on practical lessons learned and recommendations for how attendees can use this guidance as inspiration for their own future safety projects.
