North Carolina Zoological Park Stormwater Design

Kimley-Horn provided stormwater consulting services for a wetland retrofit to treat the runoff for a parking area at the North Carolina Zoological Park.

Kimley-Horn provided an innovative stormwater wetland retrofit feasibility study, construction plans and documents, and construction phase services for a 1.2-acre wetland retrofit to treat the runoff for an 11-acre parking area at the North Carolina Zoological Park.

As a part of our work with the North Carolina DOT Highway Stormwater/BMP Retrofit Program, the feasibility study was used to secure more than $400,000 from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund. The wetland was created in a finger of the existing North American Lake by constructing a dam with a unique triple barrel outlet device that regulates the water level in the wetland, provides water quality treatment, and allows backflow from the adjacent lake in the event of a drought.
