Civil engineer Matt Cox, PE, offered his insight and direction for a data center development resource as part of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Americas Data Center Product Council. This multidisciplinary technical group brings together industry professionals to research emerging data center development methods and optimize guidance for other experts.

The white paper produced by the council, Local Guidelines for Data Center Development, provides support for officials, jurisdictions, and other industry leaders hoping to integrate data centers into their communities. The guide explores data center benefits and offers ideas to mitigate challenges around sustainability, sound concerns, and site aesthetics. This resource also details strategic land use and planning recommendations as well as zoning guidance.

“There’s a myriad of information out there on data centers, but you need to know where to look. Even with all the information available, there really wasn’t a centralized guide for local authorities to reference. Many local zoning codes are silent on data centers, and the land use is so specialized it can cause confusion and be a pain point for local authorities and developers. This guide seeks to bring clarity and an understanding to the land use and be beneficial for local leaders who are interested in bringing data centers to their communities."

Local Guidelines for Data Center Development additionally provides case studies that explore the impact of data centers. Click the link below to access the guide and streamline your next data center project.
