Open face tunneling is a trenchless technology method that is ideal for large diameter crossings in stable soils and spaces with limited groundwater inflow. Kimley-Horn has designed numerous projects using this method alongside partners like Bennett Trenchless. To highlight open face tunnel excavation and two types of associated tunnel support—segmental liner and jack casing pipe—the North American Society for Trenchless Technology hosted a webinar featuring Kimley-Horn water/wastewater practice leaders and Matthew Wallin, PE, from Bennett Trenchless. The group also discussed four different tunneling projects designed by Kimley-Horn in Texas and Nevada as well as how to evaluate the best tunneling options based on unique project challenges.

Nathan Cobler PE: Nathan Cobler PE

Nathan has 15 years of civil engineering experience specializing in water and wastewater pipeline routing, replacement, and rehabilitation. His municipal project work includes water distribution, wastewater collection, tank and pump station rehabilitation, street reconstruction, hydrology and hydraulics, water modeling, and construction management. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at San Antonio and is actively involved in the American Water Works Association (AWWA), serving on several committees.
Aric Farnsworth PE: Aric Farnsworth PE

Aric is a professional engineer and registered architect with 15 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry. He has served as project manager for the planning, design, and construction administration of dozens of water and sewer infrastructure projects, including many miles of water distribution/transmission main piping and wastewater conveyance piping, multiple water storage tanks, water pumping stations, sewer lift stations, groundwater wells, and treatment plants. He has expertise in master planning, trenchless engineering, condition assessment, and pipe rehabilitation.

Stephen Kelly PE: Stephen Kelly PE

Stephen has 12 years of municipal engineering experience designing water and wastewater conveyance and distribution systems. Stephen’s planning and design background includes water system planning, hydraulic modeling and analysis, and water line design with multiple pipe materials and construction methods ranging from 6-inch through 66-inch. Stephen is currently a project manager and water/wastewater team leader for the Houston office, and delivers projects for multiple agencies and municipalities across the greater Houston area.

Trenchless Technology Practice Leader

Marty is a trenchless technology practice leader with more than 30 years of experience designing water and wastewater infrastructure and rehabilitation projects. He has worked on 200+ miles of large- and small-diameter water and wastewater pipeline projects, ranging from 6 inches to 120 inches, and has assisted multiple municipalities with planning, design, and construction phases. His experience includes 200,000 linear feet of trenchless replacement/rehabilitation methods, including cured-in-place, pipe bursting, horizontal directional drilling, microtunneling, fold and form, slip lining, tunneling, and horizontal auger boring.

As a specialist in municipal civil engineering services, Shelby provides a range of water and wastewater design services and project management services.
