Natural Gas Meter Station: Expanding Energy Infrastructure
Energy Expansion
Supported the creation of an integral project site and laid the foundation for future natural gas pipeline infrastructure

Complexity
Navigated the design of a large, intricate meter station and associated pipelines and integrated them with other site elements, like a compressor station

Multidisciplinary Services
Brought together discipline-specific experts—from structural to mechanical, electrical, civil, and beyond—to provide a wide variety of engineering and design support for this project
To support a system expansion, Kimley-Horn provided engineering, design, planning, and modeling services for a natural gas meter station in Mississippi. This project laid the groundwork for future infrastructure projects aimed at increasing energy capacity and distribution throughout the Southern United States.
Our team completed site plan development and mechanical, electrical, civil, and structural engineering and design for this project, providing services that included:
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagram creation
- Hazardous area classification plan preparation
- Bill of Materials preparation
- Remote Terminal Unit and lighting plans
- Drainage plans
- Access road plans
- Construction workplace plans
- Concrete foundation and elevated platform design
- Pipe stress analysis
- Custom pipe support design
- Drafting and 3D modeling services in Civil3D and CADWorx
Complex Station & Pipeline Design for Client Satisfaction
With a multidisciplinary team, we leaned into efficiency and flexibility to complete this intricate meter station, which required dual taps on (1)-36” mainline and (1)-30” mainline. Additionally, station piping was 30” in diameter with a 42” inlet/outlet slug catcher and a dual 30” inlet filter separator with a 42” outlet pipe, a common condensate tank, and multiple 16” meter runs. With a maximum flow capacity of 1,575 million standard cubic feet per day, the station is fully equipped with enclosed overpressure protection, automated liquid dump valves, and gas quality sampling.
While this meter station was completed in early 2025, Kimley-Horn continues to provide engineering and design services for a variety of natural gas projects in urban and remote areas—supporting enhanced energy production, distribution, and dissemination to energize the daily activities of customers.
