Nature-Forward Golfing
Surrounded by the picturesque Gabilan Mountains, the San Juan Oaks Golf Club is part of a larger mixed-use development, including a massive master planned community, amenity center, pocket and community parks, and even planned retail and hospitality elements. Bearing the original design fingerprints of golfing pro Fred Couples and architect Gene Bates, the 18-hole championship golf course was re-designed in concert with the associated golf club for a modern, engaging space with nods to centuries of Spanish architecture and history.
Site Visioning and Coordinating Success
For years, Third Millenium Partners has been leading a variety of projects throughout the San Juan Oaks development. Due to the mixed-use, multi-faceted nature of the broader site, our client needed thoughtful design guidelines, placemaking, traffic services, and a master plan that could tie everything together both thematically and geographically. Kimley-Horn, a trusted partner on multiple San Juan Oaks project types, provided the holistic site planning in addition to civil engineering, landscape architecture, traffic engineering, structural, and MEP services.
While their other site efforts were progressing, Third Millennium Partners focused specifically on updating the golf club and cultivating a premiere experience and destination for patrons—including residents of the surrounding active adult community and other Hollister locals. With responsive communication and organization, our team thoughtfully coordinated with Third Millennium Partners to animate their vision for the San Juan Oaks Golf Club, delivering quality landscape architecture services throughout the process while leveraging creativity and technical savvy to address challenging site aspects.
Balancing Upgraded Amenities with History and Nature
In a magical setting with rolling open hills and steep, oak-studded slopes, the San Juan Oaks Golf Club blended the mission style of the previous structure with modern architectural elements. Our team also re-imagined the connections to the new building’s internal spaces, including a pro shop, two restaurants, a coffee shop, a public bar, meeting rooms, and a members’ lounge that connects to an outdoor event venue—including courtyards with fireplaces, bocce courts, shade structures, fire tables, an event lawn, and relaxed seating.
Outside, we leveraged our professional experience to integrate the client’s original vision with existing site elements and transform the concept for a water feature into an innovative, cost-efficient dry creek element that wraps around the clubhouse. Additionally, we proactively partnered with the operations and onsite maintenance teams to make sure our designs aligned with their goals and standard processes. Our team also contributed to putting green and driving range designs, prioritized preserving mature trees that connect to the rolling hills and residential area, and relocated olive trees to maintain views of the mountain vistas.
The San Juan Oaks Golf Club has something for everyone, from a dedicated space for events to bocce courts, a wood-fired oven pizza and brewhouse restaurant near the 18th hole, and a variety of other sporting and community features that expand its use far beyond a golf course. Positioned inside a massive development, the club continues to be a major draw for people who enjoy golf, gathering with their community, the natural world—or all three.
