University of Cincinnati News Features Kimley-Horn Co-Op Experience

Kimley-Horn Co-op Experience

The University of Cincinnati (UC) News published an article highlighting UC Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) student Sophie Gartland’s meaningful cooperative education program (co-op) experience with Kimley-Horn, under the guidance of UC alumnus Blake Young, AICP. The article discusses how Sophie, an urban design student, began her co-op with Kimley-Horn in January 2025, joining Blake’s planning team in the Denver Downtown office. Since then, Sophie has worked directly with clients and collaborated with partners across the firm, gaining hands-on project experience that Kimley-Horn is proud to provide. As part of her co-op, Sophie also participated in our training, mentorship, and networking opportunities aimed at fostering personal and professional growth.

“The work has been valuable, and I’ve even found some people my age to explore with. It’s such an amazing and unique experience that not all universities offer.”

The article also highlights how Blake completed four co-op programs before graduating from UC in 2016, igniting his interest in urban design and shaping his career path. As Sophie’s mentor, Blake has offered her valuable experience that integrates classroom knowledge with practical applications—skills he gained from his own co-op programs.

In addition to internships, Kimley-Horn offers unique opportunities for students and emerging industry professionals to gain real-world experience through initiatives such as co-ops, which offer full-time employment experiences.
