Creative North Carolina State University Project Featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine
Kimley-Horn’s work on a North Carolina State University (NCSU) interim landscape project was featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine. Created and maintained by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the magazine is a notable industry publication featuring iconic, visually striking, and innovative projects and relevant landscape architecture topics.
Kimley-Horn supported the demolition of NCSU’s Harrelson Hall—a unique circular building that was retired after accessibility challenges—and the creation of an interim landscape in place of the classroom building. In partnership with NCSU, the Kimley-Horn team designed the landscape to align with University Plaza’s recognized brick patterns and also remind students of Harrelson Hall’s features. By recycling and reusing limestone panels from the building and participating in various other reuse efforts, the team succeeded both in creating a memorial for the classroom building and exceeding NCSU’s sustainability goals—ultimately diverting 95% of the project’s nonhazardous waste from landfills to be used for on- and off-campus endeavors.
The interim landscape was maintained on campus from 2017-2023 until the space was needed for the Integrative Sciences Building—but its sustainable legacy continues today.
