The SAWS W9 Upper Leon Creek Sewer project is a major sanitary sewer improvement initiative featuring the construction of a 48-inch diameter gravity sewer totaling approximately 22,000 linear feet. This presentation will explore the technical, geotechnical, and community coordination challenges of delivering a large-diameter sanitary sewer in a floodplain and karst environment. Lessons learned from the curved tunnel design, special specifications development, and stakeholder requirements will provide valuable insights for engineers engaged in complex urban tunneling and utility infrastructure projects.

The cities of Gainesville, Denton (Ponder), and Princeton, Texas, are experiencing rapid growth, creating an urgent need for new lift stations to support both aging infrastructure replacement and new developments in areas without gravity sewer systems. These lift stations and force mains must often serve a wide range of flows—from initial startup to full buildout—while complying with TCEQ requirements. These projects demonstrate how phased, flexible lift station designs can support long-term growth, manage uncertainty, and reduce initial costs while ensuring regulatory compliance and scalability.
