Operations & Maintenance For Transit Facilities
At Kimley-Horn, we specialize in planning and designing transit operations and maintenance facilities that are scalable, resilient, and future-ready. With extensive project experience nationwide, we bring deep expertise in site selection, master planning, FTA compliance, and stakeholder engagement. Our team has successfully delivered facilities for agencies of all sizes, ensuring each solution is tailored to local needs and long-term growth. This includes agency-specific requirements for fueling, bus washing, contracted operations, and microtransit operations.
In addition to ground-up operations and maintenance facilities, Kimley-Horn has supported multiple transit agencies with facility upgrades and retrofits to support transit operations. We have provided civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural design services to support facility retrofits such as hydrogen fuel cell electric bus maintenance, battery electric energy storage, and microgrid electric generation and integration.
Zero-Emission Fleet Transition
We’re at the forefront of zero-emission fleet infrastructure. Our team has designed hydrogen fueling systems, battery-electric bus (BEB) charging infrastructure, and microgrids to support fleet electrification. For Monterey-Salinas Transit, we’re retrofitting maintenance bays to meet National Fire Protection Association hydrogen standards and designing a microgrid to power the entire facility during outages. For City of Sedona Transit, we are designing a new facility that will be integrated with an existing large-scale solar array to support facility power.
We’ve also supported Alameda-Contra Costa Transit with hydrogen maintenance bay retrofits and BEB infrastructure upgrades, including microgrid electric generation, solar generation, and battery electric energy storage. For Stanislaus Regional Transportation Authority, we are providing new facilities to support BEB and Hydrogen fuel cell buses, including provisions for public hydrogen fueling stations as well as solar and battery energy storage systems.
Future-Ready, Sustainable Design
Our approach emphasizes long-term value through flexible layouts, integrated utility planning, and sustainable energy solutions. We design with safety, efficiency, and adaptability in mind—ensuring transit facilities are built to support evolving technologies and operational needs. With strong local knowledge and a collaborative team structure, we deliver projects that align with community goals and environmental priorities.
