The RUS Bus Transit Facility: Connecting Raleigh Residents

Comprehensive Design
Crafted a multimodal transit facility that features bicycle and pedestrian connections, rideshare locations, local bus and BRT boarding locations, and ADA-accessible accommodations

Future Vision
Paved the way for the first phase of a larger vision for integrated mixed-use development, in which RUS Bus will integrate transit with future residential and retail spaces in Raleigh’s Downtown Warehouse District

Transit Connectivity
Provided transit facility design services resulting in expanded and more efficient bus transit options and enhanced multimodal connections in Downtown Raleigh
The Raleigh Union Station Bus Facility (RUS Bus)—a new multimodal transit facility in downtown Raleigh—opened in August 2025, marking a major milestone for transit in the Triangle. Kimley-Horn provided transit design services for the facility, which connects Amtrak; local and regional buses such as GoTriangle and GoRaleigh; and future BRT services while also providing bicycle and pedestrian access. RUS Bus integrates a street-level bus facility with bike- and pedestrian-friendly spaces as well as mixed-use development in one central and lively destination in the Warehouse District.
Providing Connective Design Services
Our team led transit design for Hoffman & Associates and GoTriangle, ensuring RUS Bus featured the following:
- Bus boarding locations for local and regional buses and future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services
- Accommodations for future overhead electric bus charging
- Passenger amenities, including real time arrival signage, waiting areas, public restrooms, benches, bike and scooter racks, lockers, wayfinding maps and signage, and an information booth
- Operator amenities such as breakrooms, lockers, and restrooms
- Rideshare areas
- Bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
- ADA accessibility accommodations
Connecting Residents Across Raleigh and Beyond
Having received a $20 million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant from the US Department of Transportation for the transit facility portion of the project, RUS Bus is the first phase of a vision for a mixed-use development that will be located above the transit facility—marking the beginning of a transformative vision for North Carolina’s capital. With its opening, RUS Bus is anticipated to have a lasting impact on the community, illustrating how multimodal hubs can strengthen transit connectivity for Raleigh residents for years to come. The multimodal facility will provide seamless connections between intercity rail; local, regional and express bus services; and future Bus Rapid Transit.
