Kimley-Horn’s Orlando Int’l Airfield Planning Project Featured in Airport Improvement Magazine
Adam Johnson and Jon Martin Discuss Leading the Planning and Construction of Terminal C
Orlando International Airport’s (MCO) $2.75 billion multi-modal Terminal C will provide an immersive, high-tech experience for millions of passengers from September 2022 onward. Through collaboration with many other consultant firms and MCO’s management, Kimley-Horn provided airfield design and construction phase services to expand Terminal C. Larger than 100 professional football fields, the massive design includes over 130 acres of interloop apron and taxiway pavements, sanitary sewer and water systems with dual box culverts, a jet fuel system, and increased security fencing with a checkpoint gate.
Each of these designs, the construction of which was organized and overseen by Adam Johnson, PE, met or exceeded the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Florida Building Code criteria for taxiway object free areas, safety, grading, drainage, and structural design. The fulfillment of these standards provided a safe and efficient manner for aircraft to access the new greenfield terminal site and accommodate for three future taxiways. These innovative designs also offer space for 15 gates that can hold up to 21 narrow body, jumbo, and super-jumbo jets.
Additionally, Kimley-Horn provided planning, design, permitting, and construction phase services for the nearby Lake Gillooly Expansion project. Soil from the lake’s excavation was utilized as backfill for the terminal’s construction, and, as Senior Vice President Jon Martin noted through an interview with Airport Improvement magazine, this contribution was vital to the expansion of Terminal C and the promotion of sustainability and cost-effectiveness in this project.
