ITE Talks Kathy Falk

Traffic engineering and transportation expert Kathy Falk, PE, PTOE, spoke with host Bernie Wagenblast on the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ ITE Talks Transportation podcast to discuss the significant updates in the 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published in December 2023. Kathy also hosted a webinar for ITE as part of their MUTCD Summer Series.

Since the manual’s last update in 2009, the traffic control industry has undergone tremendous changes, and the Federal Highway Administration sought to address safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicycle users in the transportation network. Key provisions in the 11th Edition include improved accommodations in work zones for pedestrians, the introduction of new signs and pavement markings, and additional provisions for bicycle lanes. Kathy also discusses the new material dedicated to preparing agencies for automated vehicle technologies and how to best adapt infrastructure for these vehicles as we prepare for the future.
