Kimley-Horn Strengthens Surveying Services with Addition of Compass Surveying Ltd.

Compass brings decades of local project experience and established client relationships

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 03, 2026)Kimley-Horn expanded the firm’s land surveying services with the acquisition of Compass Surveying Ltd., an Illinois-based land surveying firm that has supported public- and private-sector projects across the state since 1983. The acquisition reflects Kimley-Horn’s continued investment in the region and enhances its existing surveying capabilities in a market where the firm has been growing for more than two decades.

Compass clients will continue working with the people who know their sites, schedules, and project history. That local knowledge will now be supported by Kimley-Horn’s broader technical resources and Chicagoland presence, including offices in downtown Chicago, Deerfield, and Warrenville, along with the resources of a firm with more than 160 offices across North America.

“Kimley-Horn has been intentional about growing our presence and capabilities across the Midwest, and Compass is a strong fit for how we want to serve clients,” said Colleen Marnell, Principal and Midwest Region Leader, Kimley-Horn. “Compass has built long-standing relationships by being responsive, practical, and trusted. That fits Kimley-Horn well, and together we can give clients the same personal service with broader resources behind it.”

“We chose Kimley-Horn because this felt like the right next step for our clients and our people,” said Mike Filipski, President, Compass Surveying Ltd. “We have worked alongside Kimley-Horn for years, and we know the way they value relationships, service, and follow-through. Our clients will still call the same people and work with the same team, but now that team has more support behind it.”

Compass provides land surveying services, including ALTA surveys, boundary surveys, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, construction staking, drone surveying, and LiDAR. As part of Kimley-Horn, the team will also be connected to expanded capabilities across land development, transportation and traffic engineering, water and wastewater, landscape architecture, entitlements and permitting, aviation, structural engineering, MEP, and other services.

The transaction closed on August 03, 2026.
