Building Design+Construction Features Two Kimley-Horn Experts

The January/February 2024 issue of Building Design+Construction features the expertise of two Kimley-Horn specialists: Chris Falce, a civil engineer in Florida, and Joe Kaltsas, the firm’s Chief Strategy Officer based in California.

Chris Falce, PE, LEED AP,  provides insight on man-made lagoons powered by Crystal Lagoons® technology and how Kimley-Horn is navigating their regulatory processes in the US. The article, “Crystal Lagoons: A Deep Dive,” introduces these mega-sized, year-round aquatic amenities and how they can be implemented in master-planned communities, mixed-use centers, hotels, resorts, and more. Chris has been involved with Crystal Lagoons since they first entered the US market in 2017, and he mentions that one of the most challenging issues for their implementation is navigating local regulations. According to Chris, the time frame for the approval process typically takes six to 12 months, but pre-application meetings with regulators to help them understand the lagoon can support a more efficient timeline.

Joe Kaltsas, PE, LEED AP, P.Eng., is one of the leaders featured in “What is Innovation, Anyway?,” an in-depth exploration of what firms are doing to push the boundaries of their respective industries and stay creative. He speaks to Kimley-Horn’s New Ventures incubator program, including Innovation Day, a time when employees can volunteer their out-of-the-box ideas for consideration. Joe likens the experience to “a Shark Tank within the firm,” explaining that the exercise encourages an entrepreneurial spirit.

TREDLite is one of the successful ideas that came out of Innovation Day, and this software solution is spotlighted in “Engineering Giant Develops Tool that Eliminates Guesswork of EV Chargers.” TREDLite helps businesses, local governments, and fleet operators use data to optimize site selection for electric vehicle charging stations.
