While there are fewer people traveling through airports during the pandemic, progress on airport improvement projects is not slowing down. As recently highlighted in Airport Improvement, members of Kimley-Horn’s Puerto Rico office are keeping airfield improvements on track at San Juan’s Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).

Under normal conditions, our team visits project sites to be as hands-on as possible, but when SJU shut down operations during the project bidding process, we had to get creative. Eileen Velez-Vega, P.E., led a team of more than 50 people across 10 offices that collaborated remotely around the clock to meet immovable Federal Aviation Authority deadlines.

Speaking to Airport Improvement, Velez-Vega noted that having a nationwide team meant, “we could have five separate calls on the same project for different project design elements. It was challenging to get everyone on a call at the same time, but we made it work. We had a 24-hour workday.”
