Ready for Takeoff: Kimley-Horn Sponsors Girls in Aviation Event
Since the establishment of Girls in Aviation Day in 2015, girls around the world gather annually to take part in a day of fun, interactive, and educational aviation-themed activities hosted by local chapters of Women in Aviation International (WAI). This organization—whose mission is to advance women in the aviation and aerospace industries—established Girls in Aviation Day to foster connections between its members and young girls in their communities, educating them about aviation and inspiring them to pursue future careers in the industry.
On November 11, the Puerto Rico Chapter of WAI hosted a Girls in Aviation Day celebration for girls ages 8-18. The event took place at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, and Kimley-Horn was a proud sponsor and participant.
Soaring to New Heights
At the Girls in Aviation Day event, a group of employees from the Kimley-Horn Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale offices, including Jose Garcia, PE; Kenneth Acevedo, EIT; Gabriela Chacin; Lina Garcia Mondesi; and Monica Mendelson, PE, participated in the event. The group hosted a booth, where they showcased pavement samples, displayed safety clothing used at project sites, and provided information about Kimley-Horn’s services—all to educate participants about the field of aviation.
Gabriela Chacin
“Each attendee of this event went home with new insight into all that the aviation industry has to offer. Many girls were impressed at the variety of professions within the aviation discipline that exist beyond being a stewardess or pilot and were able to learn much valuable information from women in the industry about their careers, passions, and vocations!”
Lina Garcia
“Our mission was to educate the girls about engineering and aviation, and we wanted to portray to them that everyone is capable of achieving their dreams.”
Monica Mendelson, PE
“Nearly 500 girls of all ages came out to this year’s event and were given the opportunity to explore, learn, and understand more about the field. The event was very successful, and I was grateful for the chance to share my professional experience with others and speak with students about joining Kimley-Horn to explore their love for aviation!”
The Sky’s the Limit
For more than five years, our employees have proudly participated in Girls in Aviation Day and have enjoyed watching the growth of both event attendance and community impact.
Attendees engaged with the activities and educational material our team offered, and they also gained a fresh perspective on opportunities within the industry. Through our sponsorship of Girls in Aviation Day, Kimley-Horn continues to support our commitment to empower the next generation of women in aviation.
