FRED310 Bridge Honored with PCI Transportation Award

A technical organization and trade association, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) recognizes projects with design distinction and construction quality at its annual PCI Design Awards ceremony. This honor is given to projects that used precast concrete for sustainable and efficient construction, overcame challenges, and enhanced industry best practices.

In 2026, the 192nd Street Underpass was awarded the Transportation Award for Non-Highway Bridge for its unique construction of an underpass. Part of a 310-acre industrial park in Tacoma, Washington, known as FRED310, the completed underpass provides access to a public road beneath an existing railroad track. Serving as the project’s Engineer of Record, Kimley-Horn partnered with Rail and Concrete Technology Corporation to develop a precast concrete solution with accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques to bring the 151-foot-long, three-span bridge structure to life.

The 192nd Street underpass’s use of precast concrete improved structural efficiency and durability, ultimately requiring just a seven-day railway outage to reduce disruptions to the railroad. In addition, the reduced construction-related traffic disruptions helped lower emissions and the project’s overall carbon footprint.

Now completed, the underpass supports safety for the community by removing the need for a rail crossing and bolsters growth for the FRED310 industrial park.
