Drilling Down to Eliminate Overflows

April 16, 2024 | 8:30 – 8:55am EST

To eliminate regular sanitary sewer overflows in the growing Clear Fork sanitary sewer basin, Kimley-Horn assisted the City of Fort Worth with the design of a peak flow lift station and force main. Greater than one-third (5,400 LF) of the pipeline will be installed by three horizontal directional drills (HDD) and the remaining pipe will be installed in hand tunneled steel casing (2,600 LF) and by open cut (6,400LF). The largest HDD crossing was 2,200 LF and crosses five UPRR rails, a local tollway authority bridge, and Interstate Highway 30. This paper focuses on the unique design, permitting, and construction challenges for HDD crossings.
