Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta

Atlanta Braves SunTrust Park and The Atlanta Battery Kimley-Horn

From land development and environmental to transportation and parking, Kimley-Horn performed a wide variety of services for the Atlanta Braves’ Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta mixed-use development.

Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta is home to the Atlanta Braves ballpark and is surrounded by a mixed-use development encompassing One Ballpark Center—Comcast’s nine-story regional office headquarters tower; 550 luxury residential units; the 16-level, 260-key Omni Atlanta Hotel; The Coca-Cola Roxy Theater; and retail space that includes 500,000 square feet of both shopping and restaurant and bar attractions. The ballpark has a capacity of 41,676 seats with room for an additional 3,000 standing-room-only patrons. The ballpark and mixed-use project are located on a 57-acre site with a number of outparcels for additional parking and development.

Kimley-Horn was initially engaged by the Atlanta Braves to perform red flag due diligence on the composite 82-acre land acquisition. Our services transitioned from due diligence and environmental studies to zoning support, major utility relocations, Development of Regional Impact (DRI) traffic study, transportation plans, parking concepts, and detailed civil design for the ballpark and mixed-use development.

The site posed numerous challenges throughout design and construction that were intensified by the accelerated schedule and hard deadline of the Braves’ home opener. But with each challenge, the Kimley-Horn team stepped up to the plate with exceptional design and creative solutions. After extensive research, Kimley-Horn determined that a 3-acre pond on the site was manmade and therefore able to be removed, shortening the permitting process by years. Kimley-Horn’s early review provided a way for the relocation of multiple gas lines serving the southeast U.S. with no disruption to service.

To save valuable space for parking, Kimley-Horn led the design of a stormwater basin constructed to hold 4.2 million gallons of water under one of the parking decks and two smaller concrete chamber systems adjacent to a second deck.

After months of due diligence, Kimley-Horn identified 14 access points and multiple parking areas that dispersed parking and traffic to alleviate congestion. Weeknight game start times were also pushed back to 7:35 p.m. to accommodate peak travel times.

Despite the aggressive schedule and obstacles along the way, Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta opened on schedule and to rave reviews by clients and the public alike. Atlanta Braves President of Development, Mike Plant, called their team “the envy of the sports world” due to the record time for design and construction as well as the high level of design that defines the mixed-use development.

On April 10, 2017, Truist Park opened after three and a half years of hard work, exceptional client service, and commitment by Kimley-Horn and the entire development team. It was no small feat, but the brand-new Truist Park, along with the surrounding mixed-use development project, The Battery Atlanta, was completed in a record-setting 36 months.

Everyone told us that Kimley-Horn was the perfect firm for this job, and it was true. From day 1, when we purchased the property, they've run point-on engineering and due diligence, then getting approvals and working on infrastructure access. They're sharp, top-notch, can-do people.
