Austin Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operations
The City of Austin selected Kimley-Horn to provide critical position staffing at their Traffic Management Center (TMC) in Austin, Texas.
Austin’s TMC has been in constant operation since it opened in the mid-1990s but without sufficient levels of staffing or appropriately skilled expertise. This project provides to the City skilled traffic engineers and TMC operators seven days a week, including extended hours during special events. The TMC operators coordinate with signal timing engineers in the field to develop and implement optimized signal timings, actively coordinate with field technicians to respond to problems with traffic signals, and monitor and respond to citizen request for service, among other duties.
Through this contract, Kimley-Horn is developing standard operating procedures for typical operation, special events, and incident management. The TMC staff is working closely with City staff and staff from the University of Texas Center for Transportation Research to develop and implement performance measures to monitor the effectiveness of the TMC. Kimley-Horn is meeting with City of Austin first responders as part of the TMC Operations project and regularly attends the Austin-area Incident Management for Highway (AIMHigh) regional TIM meetings.
