US 70 PILOT PROJECT STUDIES UNDERWAY

Three (3) pilot project feasibility studies along US 70 are underway as of September 2008.  The pilot projects located in Pine Level, Kinston, and James City are intended to be small localized projects (i.e., independent interchanges) that are cost-effective and have recognizable benefits as stand-alone projects.  In the long-term, these projects will help creating a future US 70 freeway corridor by extending freeway segments and providing models for retrofitting other portions of the highway.

As the studies progress, the NCDOT and their consultants will be holding public meetings and asking area stakeholders to take part in the planning process with project engineers and planners to identify issues and concerns, generate additional alternatives, refine the designs, and develop recommendations.

The following schematics reflect the project concepts.

US 70 CLAYTON BYPASS OPEN FOR TRAFFIC

Clayton, Johnston County, and state Department of Transportation officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony the morning of June 9th to open the US 70 bypass of Clayton officially. The 10.7-mile stretch of highway runs from Interstate 40 in Wake County to the U.S. 70 Business-US 70 split just east of Clayton. Officials hope the $123 million project will relieve congestion on existing US 70 through Clayton.

The project includes several environmentally friendly measures, such as a wildlife underpass, and “dynamic message signs,” said N.C. Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett. “The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources complimented the environmental stewardship of efforts during the construction,” he said. “This is a model of how things should be done.
