Columbia Pike Implementation Team (CPIT): CPIT is a group of representatives from civic associations located on or near Columbia Pike, as well as representatives from various County advisory groups and commissions originally formed to work on the Columbia Pike Street Space Planning Task Force. Columbia Pike Initiative Revitalization Plan Update: This document, which is now available, provides a refined and updated set of goals and implementation strategies. It represents the most current overall framework for the revitalization of Columbia Pike and reconciles the vision for the Pike expressed in earlier planning documents with the specific design recommendations articulated in the Form Based Code. Columbia Pike Land Use and Housing Study: As a follow-up recommendation in the Columbia Pike Initiative – A Revitalization Plan, Update 2005, staff is initiating the second phase of planning along the Pike to study the residential areas that were not included in the first phase of the plan, which focused on the commercial nodes. Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO): CPRO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that was established as a public/private partnership on May 14, 1986. CPRO is a coalition of businesses, civic associations, property owners, and individuals working with the Arlington County Government. It provides direction and support to a variety of initiatives that aim to improve and revitalize Columbia Pike and its adjacent neighborhoods. Columbia Pike Special Revitalization District Form Based Code: The Form Based Code represents a cutting-edge, revitalization and redevelopment tool. It is a legal document that regulates land development by setting careful and clear controls on building form—with broad parameters on building use—to shape clear public space (good streets, neighborhoods, and parks) with a healthy mix of uses. Columbia Pike Street Space Planning Task Force Report: A report based on the task force’s recommendations which addresses the street space environment. This report includes typical cross sections studied on a block by block basis.

Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI): FONSI is issued when environmental analysis and interagency review during the EA process find a project to have no significant impacts on the quality of the environment

Form Based Code (FBC): FBC is a means of regulating development to achieve a specific urban form. FBCs create a predictable public realm by controlling physical form primarily, with a lesser focus on land use, through city or county regulations

Infrastructure: The basic physical and organization structures needed necessary for operation. Examples include utilities, bridges, roadways, etc.

Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD): MUTCD defines the standards used by road managers nationwide to install and maintain traffic control devices on all public streets, highways, bikeways, and private roads open to public traffic. For more information, see here: mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov

Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG): MWCOG is a regional organization of Washington area local governments. MWCOG is comprised of 21 local governments surrounding our nation's capital, plus area members of the Maryland and Virginia legislatures, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives. MWCOG provides a focus for action and develops sound regional responses to such issues as the environment, affordable housing, economic development, health and family concerns, human services, population growth, public safety, and transportation. Mixed-Use: A type of development that has more than one functioning use. For example, retail shops below office space

Multimodal: Accommodating multiple different modes of transportation such as driving, walking, and biking, as well as promoting the use and sustainability of mass transit

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA): NEPA was signed into law on January 1, 1970. The Act establishes national environmental policy and goals for the protection, maintenance, and enhancement of the environment and it provides a process for implementing these goals within the federal agencies. Node: An intersection of a highly travelled area, either by pedestrians or vehicles. These areas normally have a different aesthetic treatment to promote interaction

Redevelopment: Improvements to an existing building or existing land use

Revitalization District: An area that is receiving private and public investment in order to address the economic decline and physical deterioration that accompanies disinvestment

Right-of-Way (ROW): ROW is a strip of land that is dedicated to transportation, typically owned by a public entity

Streetspace: The environment located within the roadway ROW which is dedicated to both different forms of travel and aesthetics such as street trees, site furniture, and special paving materials

Super Stops: The second phase of major transit improvements for Columbia Pike that will install new larger shelters with passenger amenities.

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD): A mixed-use residential or commercial area designed to maximize access to public transportation, and often incorporates features to encourage transit ridership

Transit Signal Priority (TSP) System: Providing an early or extended green signal or a special signal phase at an intersection to assist public transit vehicles to remain on schedule

Transportation Analysis: A study performed to evaluate the existing and/or future operations of a transportation network
