How will construction affect boat traffic?

The goal of the project is that there will be no negative impact to boat traffic. Late in construction, when four lanes of bridge traffic has been shifted to the new bridge, there will be increased vertical clearance for marine traffic so that all forms of travel will be improved.

What is the total cost of the new bridge?

The current construction cost estimate is for approximately $110,620,769.

Who is the contractor for this project?

The project is currently in preliminary design. The Design/Build Contractor will be selected by the FDOT in July, 2010.

How long will construction take?

The current construction time estimate is for approximately 4 years.

What will happen to the existing bridge?

The existing bridge will be removed in its entirety. At this time, it is not known if it can be utilized somewhere nearby for an artificial reef.

How will traffic be maintained?

The construction phasing will be designed to maintain two lanes of vehicular traffic in both directions at all times. There will be some periods during off-peak hours where traffic will be further restricted. At least one sidewalk will be maintained across the waterway at all times for pedestrian travel.

How was the new bridge selected?

The PD&E Study considered many alternatives including rehabilitation of the existing bridge. The selected alternative was finalized upon receipt of LDCA on April 9, 2008. The evaluated alternatives can be viewed under the PD&E tab.
