Project Description

Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is restoring approximately 11,000 linear feet of Torrence Creek Tributary #1 from Interstate 77 to Bradford Hill Lane in Huntersville. The project will end where Torrence Creek Tributary #1 flows into Torrence Creek. This project includes the following objectives:

  • Stabilize and restore of 2 miles of stream
  • Reduce sediment in the stream by approximately 1.6 million pounds per year
  • Enhance the vegetated floodplain to reduce water pollution levels
  • Improve water quality and aquatic habitat

This project is important because Torrence Creek water shed is a major headwater tributary to McDowell Creek which is currently listed on the 303(d) list of impacted streams and has been identified as impaired waters by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality. In addition, McDowell Creek flows directly to Mountain Island Lake which is the major source of potable/drinking water in Mecklenburg County.
