The 1,350-space Virginia Tech Parking Deck is an innovation in cost-effective design. Kimley-Horn's services for this design-build project included parking/functional layout design, civil and structural engineering, and construction phase support. To maximize openness, KHA designed the first floor to follow the existing site grade, which slopes up an entire floor level as you move through the structure. This design feature allowed the deck to remain open on all floors without use of area-ways or berms, significantly reducing excavation and retaining wall costs while minimizing site disturbance limits and maintaining adjacent landscapes and sidewalks.
