SR 143 at Sky Harbor Boulevard Interchange Modifications

Kimley-Horn provided roadway, drainage, structural, traffic, and landscape services for the interchange modifications on SR 143 in Phoenix, Arizona.

This award-winning interchange modification project, which was featured in the Bentley Sustaining Infrastructure publication, provided much needed improvements for the east access to the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Kimley-Horn provided roadway, drainage, structural, traffic, and landscape services for this project. We designed a 14-span flyover that conveys westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard over the SR 143 (southbound). This project involved a Value Engineering Study to evaluate an alternative of building additional structure length due to the high cost of importing fill and to keep the characteristics of the utilities and drainage basin which would have been impacted by placing fill.

A key element considered in design was constructing the flyover over existing traffic including construction sequence and road closure considerations. In addition, the site is in the center of the Hohokam prehistoric site, so our team incorporated landform graphics based on Hohokam patterns from pottery, baskets, and textiles.
