The Navajo Nation covers over 27,000 square miles and extends into the states of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Diné Bikéyah, or Navajoland, is larger than 10 of the 50 states in the U.S.! This vast land is home to the Diné, “the people,” as well as more than a dozen national monuments, tribal parks, and historical sites. The Navajo are world renowned for their arts and crafts, including weaving and rug making, silversmithing and jewelry, basket making, and sandpainting. The archaeological significance of the region stretches back thousands of years before the time of the Anasazi or “ancient ones” who resided in the area. The area’s earliest inhabitants include Paleo-Indian hunters and Archaic hunter-gatherers. Here you can step back in time and see how the ancient ones lived thousands of years ago by exploring ancient ruins, including the world renowned Navajo National Monument and the tranquil Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the towering rock formations of Monument Valley to the majestic red sandstone walls and lush green valley floor of Canyon de Chelly, this is a land of great contrasts. A notable contrast being traditional verses modern ways of life. The Navajo, with their belief in harmony, have blended both the traditional and the modern. The unique culture and collage of beautiful landscapes makes the Navajo Nation unlike any other place on earth.
