A distinction among all Scenic Roads is that they are recognized as being a special resource the community wants to preserve and a place the local residents want to share with visitors. Tse’nikani, meaning “flat mesa rock” in Navajo, is located on the US 191 between milepost 467 and 510. The road weaves its way through northeastern Arizona where visitors encounter the natural and virtually untouched lands of the Navajo Nation. Vegetation along the road is primarily desertscrub and striking red rock formations call attention to the breathtaking landscape.
When traveling this Tse’nikani Scenic Road, many different experiences are awaiting exploration. Many Farms Lake, located in the alluvial flats of Chinle Valley at the juncture of US 191 and NR 59, offers recreational opportunities for visitors looking to camp, boat, hike, and fish. For those interested in learning more about the Navajo culture, Canyon de Chelly is located just miles south of the Scenic Road and provides visitors with spectacular sights, rich history, and numerous geological formations. Even if visitors are just driving through the area, there are the many unique rock formations along the way to make it an interesting and memorable drive. From Gun Rock to Dancing Rock to Gossip Rock, these distinctive formations all have their own stories passed down among the Navajo highlighting the tribe’s strong relationship with nature.
