The Fredonia–Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Road traverses 82 miles along SR 89A between mileposts 525 and 607. This wondrous Scenic Road is the gateway to the Colorado River in Marble Canyon and to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Heading north on this road from Bitter Springs on the Navajo Nation, travelers can stop at the Navajo Bridge. Visitors can compare the bridge constructed in 1929 (now a pedestrian bridge) with the newer bridge constructed alongside it in 1995. At the time the original Navajo Bridge was constructed, it was the only crossing of the Colorado River for 600 miles in either direction. After walking across the pedestrian bridge, visitors can go inside the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center to learn more.
The Scenic Road follows the Vermilion Cliffs and begins a 2,500-foot climb through the Kaibab Plateau. The Kaibab Plateau begins just after House Rock, and is heavily forested with spruce-fir, aspen, and mixed-conifer forests. More than 50 species of mammals reside there.
At Jacob Lake, access is provided to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (at the SR 67 turnoff). Continuing on from Jacob Lake, the road descends the west side of the plateau to an isolated area known as the Arizona Strip and ends at Fredonia, Arizona.
