The Michigan Department of
Transportation (MDOT) is currently in the process of developing a
statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Architecture and
Deployment Plan, along with regional plans for the Bay, Grand, North, Southwest,
SEMCOG, and
Superior Regions. For an overview of the status of these
projects, click
here.
Some common
examples of ITS include dynamic message signs and cameras along
freeways, flood detection on local roads, traffic signal
coordination on corridors, traffic signal priority for emergency
vehicles, and automated vehicle location for transit vehicles. Click
here for an
overview of ITS. ITS creates numerous opportunities for sharing
resources and data to improve safety and mobility and reduce
operating costs.
The ITS
Architecture and Deployment Plans are intended to
inventory existing ITS systems, define ITS needs, and lay out a long
term plan, statewide and for each
region. The intent of the architecture development process is to identify
opportunities as they apply to organizations within each region,
develop a roadmap for future ITS projects, and allow each
region to be eligible for federal funding of ITS projects.
